What to Expect

  • Exam Prep Course: This course is designed to help you prepare for a certification exam. You can expect coverage of all exam learning objectives, with a focus on understanding key concepts, terminology, and how they’re assessed. For a deeper, more hands-on learning experience, consider Course 1852, Scrum Master Training, or 1853, Scrum Product Owner Training.
  • Content Volume: Certification courses cover a large amount of material in a short time. Instructors prioritize content tied to exam objectives and supplementary topics may be addressed as time allows.
  • Content Pace: Certification courses are fast-paced so that all exam objectives are covered. Instructors adhere to a stricter schedule so that everything is covered. While discussions and examples are included, the focus remains on certification readiness.
  • Outside of Class Study Time: Plan for self-study outside of class, especially if the content is new to you. Passing the exam is not guaranteed.

  • Who Should Attend: Designed for beginners or team members with limited scrum exposure
  • Official Prerequisites: There are no official prerequisites required from the certifying bodies (APMG and ABC).
  • Pre-Course Knowledge: There is no required pre-course knowledge, however, it is helpful for those who are brand new to scrum and Agile to spend some time reading the Agile Manifesto to familiarize yourself with the concepts.

Required Pre-Course Preparation

  • Review the pre-course communication from Learning Tree to understand how to access all of your course materials.
  • Ensure you have access to your My Learning Tree portal before the start of class. Reach out to Learning Tree customer service if you are having trouble.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Agile Manifesto before class (sent via email before class).

Certification & Exam Information

  • Certification Alignment: This course helps you prepare for the ABC/APMG Scrum Essentials certification exam.
  • Certification Expectations: Attendees should expect that some study outside of course hours will be required for certification success. The amount of self-study will depend on prior familiarity with the topic. Passing the exam is not guaranteed.
  • Exam Details: 
    • Number/Type of Questions: 50 multiple choice
    • Pass Rate: 30 out of 50 (60%)
    • Exam Style: Closed Book
    • Exam Delivery: Exams are invigilated in class.

    Module 1: Scrum Theory and Agile Foundations

    • Understand the definition, purpose, and composition of Scrum
    • Learn the foundations of Empiricism and Lean thinking
    • Explore the three pillars of transparency, inspection, and adaptation
    • Review Agile Manifesto values and Agile principles

    Module 2: Scrum Roles and Responsibilities

    • Define key Scrum roles: Developers, Product Owner, Scrum Master
    • Understand cross-functionality and self-management
    • Learn how each role contributes to delivering value
    • Explore the Scrum Master’s service to the team, Product Owner, and organization

    Module 3: Scrum Events

    • Understand the purpose and structure of all five Scrum events:
      Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective
    • Explore how events reinforce Scrum’s transparency and empirical control
    • Learn how events support cadence, forecasting, and stakeholder collaboration

    Module 4: Scrum Artefacts

    • Learn the purpose and characteristics of Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, and Increment
    • Understand the commitments for each artefact (Product Goal, Sprint Goal, Definition of Done)
    • Explore backlog refinement and the delivery of usable Increments

    Module 5: Practical Scrum Techniques

    • Structure backlog items as user stories
    • Apply the Four C’s of user stories: Card, Conversation, Confirmation, Context
    • Use estimation techniques: Planning Poker, Affinity Estimating
    • Understand commitment-based planning and velocity forecasting

    Module 6: Exam Preparation

    • Review key concepts and definitions across all syllabus areas
    • Practice sample questions in the format of the official exam
    • Prepare strategies for exam success
