What is this course about?

In this course, you learn the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and why it matters in the workplace. You learn the core competencies needed to display Emotional Intelligence and how to apply these competencies in leadership and other interpersonal situations.

This course presents self-management tools and techniques for improved personal effectiveness as well as improved team performance. You gain the skills to motivate and engage your teams and foster cooperative working relationships through the application of Emotional Intelligence.

What background do I need?

No special background or experience is required, although some previous experience in a leadership role is helpful.. However, participants should be ready and willing to work on the emotional dimension of their behaviour. This course increases awareness of emotional responses – both your own and those of others – and provides an approach that optimises team potential and performance.

What approach to EI does the course take?

Emotional Intelligence cannot be developed simply by applying a set of tools and techniques in the classroom. Emotionally intelligent leadership comes about by enhancing the existing EI skills that are within you. This course provides the framework needed to help you integrate and demonstrate these competencies in your personal and professional life.

What skills will I take away from this course?

This course offers the skills to effectively identify the impact that emotions have in the workplace. This course also provides the tools to manage interpersonal relationships and team dynamics.

Will my EI be measured in this course?

Yes. Using an EI measurement tool, you discover your own unique EI profile. This feedback helps you identify your strengths and areas of focus for further development.

Does this course follow a model or road map?

Yes. This course explores EI through a 2x2 competency model that is evidence-based and has been proven to enhance performance in a variety of workplace studies. This model focuses on key areas of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. For each competency, you learn the basic skills and then practice them during experiential activities in the context of your own leadership style.

How is this course structured?

This course is structured around a dynamic style of learning created by Learning Tree called RealityPlus^TM – an immersive experience that engages you in authentic tasks performed individually and in small teams. The RealityPlus learning method is presented in a safe and media-rich environment where you gain new skills and practice the most effective techniques to apply in your leadership role back at work.

What kinds of activities are included in this course?

Individual activities include exploring your own emotional awareness and EI profile and retraining your thinking patterns. In group activities, participants examine awareness of others' emotions, their impact on behaviour and how to work more effectively in team situations. Course activities draw on the latest techniques and processes.

About 60 percent of course time is devoted to experiential activities, which include the following:

• Identifying the four EI competencies that foster leadership success
• Measuring your Emotional Intelligence through a reliable assessment tool
• Mapping your strengths and weaknesses through self-reflection
• Uncovering negative self-talk patterns
• Reframing thoughts and perspectives to achieve a positive outcome
• Monitoring the emotional responses of others
• Creating an individual EI action plan
• Optimising your EI skills in a real-world scenario

Is this course applicable toward a Project Management Institute (PMI) certification?

Yes. Though this course is not designed as preparation for an exam, it is beneficial to anyone working toward, or maintaining, a PMI certification. Most PMI certifications require a specific number of PDUs in order to obtain and maintain the credential. Completion of this course provides 17 professional development units (PDUs).
